Austin, the states capitol is nothing shy of extraordinary. From the nature and the landscapes, to the retro flashback 70s type vibes, Austin feels independent compared to it’s surroundings in such a one-of-a-kind way. You can see the best of Austin in a weekend, but you could easily spend a couple extra days here. Here is how I like to spend a weekend in this awesome city, but whatever you choose to do be sure to keep Austin weird.
Of course this has to be first on the list because Austin is the live music capitol of the world. Check out a local band, or head to a festival. Whatever you do, don’t leave Austin without seeing an awesome live performance.
Have yourself a picnic at Zylker Park, the park where the famous Austin City Limits festival is held. Pick up a veggie sandwich and some juicy watermelon from wholefoods (if your a true wholefoods fan, visit the first one ever made located on Lamar Blvd.), and enjoy your sunny day cloud gazing. There’s so many different activities here, which makes it a popular place for the weekends.
Scouting out all of the famous murals and street art around Austin is so fun and adventurous. You will feel like you’ve found the gold at the end of the rainbow each time you spy one. Bring your Polaroid camera and snap a pic with each one for fun times and good memories. Check out this quick guide to find out where all the good ones are.
Chill and cool off from the Texas summer heat with a trip to Barton Springs Pool, Austin’s most popular place for a swim located right in the middle of town. Enjoy the refreshing waters with locals and travelers alike, and occasionally even that one hippie without her top on, since clothes are optional here. If skinny dipping is your cup of tea, you can also take a visit to Hippie Hollow au-naturel. Keep Austin weird y’all.
Check out the state capitol building, even if its just a quick drive by.
A trip to Austin wouldn’t be complete without indulging in some Tex-Mex. And for all you plant-based babes out there, there’s plenty of options for us as well.
Every day just before sunset from March to October, tons bats fly out from under the Congress Avenue bridge right before sunset. Making a sort of bat cloud in the Austin sky. It’s really an incredible sight to see.
I had some of the best times on Rainey Street! It’s essentially a street with old historic houses and bungalows, turned into bars, pubs, restaurants and night clubs. You walk into what seems like someones house and hangout in the backyard with your friends, and have a drink or eat some great food. It’s such a great atmosphere with chill laid back vibes all around. Be sure to catch some live music here as well. And at the end of the night before you get yourself home, stop by one of the food trucks to fill your drunken bellies with some amazing food.
Kayaking, water bikes, or the ever popular stand-up paddle boarding, this is a perfect way to get outside and get a light workout in as well. Head over to Lady Bird Lake for a great time in the sun.
Austin has some of the best vintage stores! Don’t leave this amazing city without snagging some awesome vintage finds.
Austin is the food truck Mecca. You haven’t truly experienced Austin’s food culture until you’ve eaten something from one of their famous food trucks. And you won’t have a hard time finding one, because they are all over the city!
Oh man 6th street, how crazy and chaotic you are. People filled streets any day of the week, and countless bars you won’t know which one to choose. 6th street is usually something you do just once for the hell of it, then move on. You probably don’t want to make a habit out of it. Once you’ve had your share of fun on 6th street, wander over to Rainey street, where you’ll find awesome bars and chill vibes.
Visit The Oasis for a drink with an awesome view. I suggest going at dusk for the best sunset view you’ll find in all of Austin. But fair warning, it will be packed. There is a restaurant which you would most likely need to make reservations for. Or you can skip the wait and just head up stairs to The Oasis Texas brewery for a drink with the same awesome view. You won’t even believe your in Texas! Looks like paradise for sure.
Austin is such an active and outdoorsy place. So whatever you do be sure to spend some of your time out in nature.
